Don't shrink Fethiye to one photograph
The Ölüdeniz lagoon that comes to mind is only the district's postcard. The real Fethiye is a lively town watched over by rock tombs, Çalış's sunset shore, Babadağ's launch ramps in the clouds, the silent stone houses of Kayaköy and the wild southern coast dropping from Butterfly Valley to Kabak. The Lycian Way starts here too; you are standing at kilometre zero of Turkey's most famous long-distance trail.
This guide has 14 numbered stops. The numbers match the pins on the map below, and tapping a pin opens that place's own guide where one exists. Distances run as the crow flies from the Fish Market; on this mountainous southern coast the road runs much longer. Hours, fees and boat or cable-car conditions change; confirm officially. Price marks are relative: ₺ budget, ₺₺ mid, ₺₺₺ expensive.

Things to do in Fethiye
1. The town centre and the Fish Market
A living centre on top of ancient **Telmessos**: the promenade, the old bazaar and, at its heart, the district's best-loved institution, the Fish Market. The custom is simple and festive: pick your fish at the central stalls, have one of the surrounding lokantas cook it, build a meze table around it. On the slope above, the **Lycian rock tombs** (the grandest, Amyntas's, from the 4th century BC) watch the town from everywhere, and the evening lighting flatters them. Our night-walk film shows this line after dark.
- Getting there: The district's point zero; the whole promenade walks.
- Time: Half a day; a full one with a fish dinner.
- While you're here: The Tuesday market (no. 14) and the Lycian Way trailhead (no. 2) are close.
- Budget: ₺₺ (stall price plus cooking fee; ask before sitting).
- Common mistake: Sitting down in the Fish Market without prices; agree the weight and cooking fee first.
2. The Lycian Way trailhead
Turkey's most famous long-distance route, the 500-kilometre Lycian Way, begins on Fethiye's side. The whole takes weeks, but the opening stages walk as day trips; the Ovacık-Faralya direction is the classic taster. Waymarks are red and white; water and serious shoes are non-negotiable.
- Getting there: Trailheads on the centre-Ovacık line; ~1.5 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A day stage runs 3-6 hours.
- While you're here: The Faralya viewpoint (no. 10) is the route's reward.
- Budget: ₺.
- Common mistake: Starting a stage at summer noon; a 6-7 am start is this trail's golden rule.
3. Çalış Beach
The long pebble-and-sand shore north of the centre; its sunset is the district's best, dropping behind island silhouettes. With its walking path, restaurant strip and Sunday market it is a neighbourhood of its own. A water taxi links it to the centre in summer, the most pleasant commute in town.
- Getting there: 10-15 minutes by dolmuş or by water taxi; ~3.5 km as the crow flies.
- Time: Beach plus a sunset evening.
- While you're here: The centre (no. 1) is a water-taxi ride away.
- Budget: ₺-₺₺.
- Common mistake: Expecting Ölüdeniz sand; Çalış's cards are the sunset and the tempo, not the sand.
4. Ölüdeniz and Belcekız
Turkey's most photographed bay: the waveless lagoon, Belcekız's open beach and paragliders drifting down from the mountain. The lagoon section is protected and charges entry; July-August crowds are serious. Our film shows the shore's real density. However clichéd, Fethiye is not finished until you have come here.
- Getting there: 25-35 minutes by dolmuş; ~8 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A full beach day.
- While you're here: Kıdrak (no. 5) is 5 minutes; the Babadağ cable car (no. 6) rises behind the beach.
- Budget: ₺₺ (lagoon entry plus sunbeds; ask current rates).
- Common mistake: Arriving at noon; the lagoon at 9 am is another planet, at 12 it is a festival ground.
5. Kıdrak Beach
The pine-shaded cove just south of Ölüdeniz: the same turquoise, far fewer people, run as a nature park. On days when Ölüdeniz overflows, the calm here feels like a small miracle.
- Getting there: 5 minutes from Ölüdeniz by car or dolmuş; ~9 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A beach day.
- While you're here: Ölüdeniz (no. 4) adjoins; compare the two in one day.
- Budget: ₺₺ (park entry).
- Common mistake: Fighting for space at Ölüdeniz unaware this exists.
6. Babadağ
One of the world capitals of paragliding, launching from 1,900 metres down to the sea; a cable car also lifts non-flyers to the terrace stations above the lagoon. Even without a flight, the 1700 and 1900 terraces are the best bird's-eye view of Ölüdeniz there is. Sunset flights are their own legend.
- Getting there: By cable car from near Ölüdeniz; ~10 km as the crow flies. Flight packages include transfer.
- Time: 2-3 hours for the terraces; half a day with a flight.
- While you're here: Ölüdeniz (no. 4) is the landing zone.
- Budget: cable car ₺₺; tandem flight ₺₺₺.
- Common mistake: Ignoring the wind; flights depend on conditions, keep a flexible day.
7. Kayaköy
Hundreds of empty stone houses spread over a hillside: the Greek village of Levissi, emptied by the 1923 population exchange, stands today like an open-air museum. Walking its lanes gives the textbook word "exchange" a human scale. Two ruined churches, and silence climbing the hill. Late-afternoon light is the right hour, for photographs and for feeling.
- Getting there: 20 minutes by dolmuş; ~5.5 km as the crow flies. A trail links it to Ölüdeniz.
- Time: 1.5-2 hours.
- While you're here: The 2-3 hour walking trail to Ölüdeniz starts here.
- Budget: ₺ (site entry; check current terms).
- Common mistake: A quick photo lap; this village cannot be hurried.
8. Butterfly Valley
A beach and valley hidden between two giant cliffs, named for its butterfly species. The land descent is dangerous and not recommended; the right way in is by boat from Ölüdeniz. The valley floor is protected; a boat-tour stop is the usual visit.
- Getting there: 20-30 minutes by boat from Ölüdeniz; ~14 km as the crow flies.
- Time: 1-2 hours on a boat stop.
- While you're here: Boat routes usually continue toward Kabak.
- Budget: included in the boat tour.
- Common mistake: Attempting the cliff path; accident reports come every year; take the boat.
9. Kabak Bay
The southern coast's last stop with a hippie soul: tent camps, yoga platforms, treehouses and a cove far from the power lines. The road steepens after Faralya; the descent is by trail or shuttle. Not for comfort-seekers; exactly right for escape-seekers.
- Getting there: 50-60 minutes by dolmuş via Faralya plus the descent; ~13.5 km as the crow flies.
- Time: Ideally a night; on a day trip, noon to evening.
- While you're here: The Faralya viewpoint (no. 10) is on the road.
- Budget: ₺-₺₺ (camp-to-bungalow range is wide).
- Common mistake: Coming with a suitcase; this place suits a backpack and loose expectations.
10. The Faralya viewpoint
The cliff-edge terrace above Butterfly Valley; the municipally built platform is the safest balcony over the valley there is. Our Faralya film carries this line's atmosphere. Skip the cliff-edge selfie bravado; the view is dramatic enough on its own.
- Getting there: Roadside in Faralya village; ~13 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A 20-30 minute stop.
- While you're here: Kabak (no. 9) is 10 minutes on.
- Budget: ₺.
- Common mistake: Stepping past the safety line; the cliff is 300 metres.
11. Katrancı Bay
North of the centre, a nature-park cove where pine forest walks into the sea: shade, picnic order and calm water. This stop on the Göcek road is the one-move exit from the crowds; neighbouring Günlüklü and Kuleli share its character.
- Getting there: 15-20 minutes on Göcek-bound dolmuş; ~9 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A half or full day.
- While you're here: Göcek (no. 12) continues up the same road.
- Budget: ₺-₺₺ (park entry).
- Common mistake: A weekend noon arrival; the shaded tables go early.
12. Göcek
The capital of the yachting world: six marinas, a calm town bazaar and the anchorages of the Twelve Islands offshore. A place lived by boat rather than walked; daily Twelve Islands tours leave from here and from Fethiye. The Monday market is the town's most local hour.
- Getting there: 30-40 minutes by dolmuş; ~21 km as the crow flies.
- Time: A full day with the town and a boat trip.
- While you're here: Katrancı (no. 11) makes the return break.
- Budget: town ₺₺, marina line ₺₺₺.
- Common mistake: Expecting a beach town; Göcek has no beach; you take a boat to a cove.
13. Kadyanda Ancient City
Above Üzümlü at 1,000 metres, a Lycian city sunk in pine forest: theatre, stadium and walls, entirely off the tourist track. The hidden card for anyone wanting a cool history walk on a hot day. A weaving-and-breakfast stop in Üzümlü village is the bonus.
- Getting there: 35-40 minutes by car; ~15.5 km as the crow flies.
- Time: Half a day with the Üzümlü stop.
- While you're here: Üzümlü's village bazaar is on the way.
- Budget: ₺.
- Common mistake: Expecting site comforts; trail conditions dominate, wear shoes.
14. Fethiye's markets
The big Tuesday market is the district classic: a full Aegean market from textiles to olives. Çalış's Sunday market comes down to the shore neighbourhood; Saturday's sets up toward Patlangıç. Do not confuse them with the Fish Market (no. 1), which opens daily.
- Getting there: The Tuesday market is central; ~1 km as the crow flies.
- Time: 1-2 hours.
- While you're here: The promenade and bazaar adjoin.
- Budget: ₺.
- Common mistake: An afternoon visit; the best stalls belong to morning people.

Five minutes of Fethiye history
The bay's ancient name is **Telmessos**, a city thought to reach back to the 2000s BC and one of Lycia's famous oracle centres. The rock tombs on the slope are that era's signature, the grandest being **Amyntas's tomb** from the 4th century BC. The modern name honours an aviator: **Fethi Bey**, among the first Ottoman pilots to die in a 1914 crash, gave the town its name by Atatürk's decision in 1934. The 1923 exchange emptied **Levissi (Kayaköy)** on the hillside and left one of Turkey's most moving open-air museums. In **1957** two earthquakes of 7.1 and 7.3, a day apart, levelled the town; today's centre is that rebuilding. The tourism age was opened by two images: the lagoon of Ölüdeniz and the paragliders drifting off Babadağ.
A first-timer's three days
**Day 1, centre plus Kayaköy:** The promenade and bazaar (no. 1) in the morning; Kayaköy (no. 7) at midday; with energy, walk the Kayaköy-Ölüdeniz trail down to the lagoon (no. 4), otherwise take the dolmuş. A Fish Market table at night.
**Day 2, Ölüdeniz plus altitude:** Ölüdeniz (no. 4) early; escape to Kıdrak (no. 5) at noon. Babadağ (no. 6) in the late afternoon: the cable car to the terraces, or a sunset flight if you have the nerve. Dinner on the Ovacık-Hisarönü line.
**Day 3, south or sea:** Either a Faralya (no. 10) plus Kabak (no. 9) day, or a Twelve Islands boat tour from Göcek (no. 12). Close with the Çalış sunset (no. 3) whichever you choose.
Classic mistakes
1. **Reaching Ölüdeniz at noon.** The 9 am lagoon and the 12 pm lagoon are different places. 2. **Descending to Butterfly Valley by the path.** The cliff trail is dangerous; with boats running, the risk buys nothing. 3. **Booking the Babadağ flight for the last day.** Wind cancellations are real; keep a spare day. 4. **Skipping Kayaköy.** No stronger way exists to add half a day of history to a beach holiday. 5. **Not asking prices at the Fish Market.** Weight, cooking fee and meze are separate lines; settle them first. 6. **Taking a suitcase to Kabak.** The descent path does not love luggage. 7. **Starting the Lycian Way at noon.** This trail's hour is dawn; no stage without shade and water plans.
When the sea is off the table
A grey day is not a lost day here: Kayaköy (no. 7) gains power in cloudy light; Kadyanda (no. 13) becomes what it should be in cool air; the centre's museum-bazaar-rock-tombs triangle fills half a day. On a windy day even wave-watching at Çalış (no. 3) earns its keep.
Day trips
**Saklıkent Gorge:** ~50 minutes. A canyon walk in ice-cold water; summer's antidote.
**Tlos and Yakapark:** The same valley as Saklıkent; one of Lycia's oldest cities plus a trout-farm lunch.
**Dalyan:** ~1.5 hours. Rock tombs, the river boat and İztuzu; details in our Dalyan guide.
Planning questions
**How many days are enough?** Three for Ölüdeniz and the centre; five or six sit well with the southern coast, Göcek and a trail stage.
**Where to stay?** The centre for town life, Çalış for sunsets and families, Ovacık-Hisarönü for Ölüdeniz practicality, Faralya-Kabak for escape; details in our where-to-stay guide.
**Doable without a car?** Fethiye is dolmuş heaven: the Ölüdeniz, Çalış, Kayaköy and Faralya lines run steadily. A car adds comfort for Kadyanda and the coves; see our car-free Fethiye guide.
**When can I swim?** June to October comfortably; September is best. The sheltered lagoon runs a little longer.
**Is paragliding safe?** With licensed operators and respected weather limits it is world-standard; morning flights are usually the most stable. The judgement and the questions are yours to make.
**One day only?** Ölüdeniz in the morning, Kayaköy at midday, the promenade and Fish Market in the evening. That triangle is Fethiye in a day.
